The “Residential Guidelines” recommends that a crèche be provided in new residential estates with over 75 units in the development. The site at Portersfield is a mixed development of 2 & 3 storey houses and 3 storey over basement apartment buildings. The crèche is provided to meet the needs of parents with young children. Initial research data provided us with the knowledge of the number of users to the crèche, i.e. 45 babies, 35 infants, and 25 young school children.
The crèche was to be two storeys in height to match the existing residential houses to the east and west of the site. Two large play areas were provided with baby sleeping areas on the first floor and a toddler area on the ground floor. An after school club would be situated away from the toddler area. Kitchen and utility services would be on the ground floor with toilet accommodation on both floors. The design of the proposal was to compliment the existing housing with a modern contemporary building for the crèche.
Sound proofing had to be provided between the areas both vertically and horizontally. The Eastern Health Board (now the HSE), have stringent rules on childcare. We also had to take account of the Fire Safety Certificate and evacuation procedures. A successful crèche now operates from this facility with up to 60 children being catered for.
